- People are human beings, treat them like humans, not machines
- Be empathetic, and make sure you listen to them very carefully when they reach out to you with problems: those problems may be personal and professional
- Be empathetic to Organization as well, which means you should understand the timeline of the projects/deliverables and ensure resources are available to complete assigned tasks on time
- Spend time with people, both formally and informally
- Always assume positive intent
- Always use email as a mode of communication, even if you have discussed anything verbally
- Trust but verify. Always take their word if they are saying that they have done something, but do not hesitate to see how and where it’s done.
- Ensure that you are fully aware of policies and procedures of the organization’s related employees; like employee benefits, leaves etc.
- Documentation is the key, make sure all the 1-1 meetings are documents. This will enable you to measure the progress of a person on a week-to-week basis.
- Get regular feedback from peers for your employees
- Lead by example – people do what people see
- Learn the people development rule below by John Maxwell – this will also help you in delegating tasks
- I do it
- For any task which you want to delegate, you need to master it first. If you do not how it works, do not delegate
- I do it, you watch
- You do that and let the other person watch how are you doing it
- You do it, I am with you
- Let the person take control and you watch it
- You do it
- Let the person do it independently
- You do it, and somebody with you
- Let the person you train, train other people
- Make sure to be a good organizer
- Ensure to look at the calendar for all participants
- Ensure meetings are started and finished on time
- Ensure the meeting minutes are captured and shared
